Even ones that have rotted at ground level should have enough good wood in them for your purpose,unless you are building a very tall garage! Cables are "supposed" to be a minimum of 16ft.from the road surface.

My brothers a tree surgeon and takes them out for BT , e mail me , im sure he'll be happy to help ...
