I have this argument with friends every time we do cooking. Basically, they all call dessert spoons tablespoons, and even have measuring spoons witch say a dessert spoon is the larger. Various people in my family have worked in catering, we have spoons which even say tablespoon on them and I have checked on the internet. So why does even the Home Ec teacher call them tablespoons? Where did this come from?
Thank you, it's really bugging me.
Update:Sorry for not phrasing the question well: I was wondering about the etymology of tablespoon vs. dessert spoon. All the answers so far have just told me the difference, which I already know.

A tablespoon is three teaspoons. A dessert spoon is two tablespoons.
Most people wouldn't know the difference because they don't use dessert spoons. So they see a dessert spoon and they say 'That's a tablespoon' because it's bigger than a teaspoon.

I've always thought that a tablespoon is bigger than a dessert spoon and can be used at the table to serve food from the container in which it was cooked.
A dessert spoon (the smaller one, but bigger than a teaspoon) is the one used to eat a dessert.
A dessert spoon is what we Brits use when we eat our pudding. A tablespoon is what I use in cooking, and also as a serving spoon. It is bigger than a dessert spoon.

A table spoon is bigger than a dessert spoon. A table spoon is used to serve food and a dessert spoon is used to eat dessert.
people call a dessert spoon a table spoon because it was oringanally made of wood and a table spoon is sopposed to be small and usefull like a dessert spoon so they just call the same thing a diffrent way.

I've never heard of a dessert spoon before this. There are only teaspoons and tablespoons, except in measuring spoons, which have fractions of the two.
