Honistly... just buy the BB kit that matches your frame and cranks. As long as it's mid, it will fit in a mid BB. You should also consider the fact that sealed barrings are the only sutable replacement. Never replace an unsealed BB with another unsealed BB.
If you can't fathem saving up $35 to buy a new BB, consider not spending any money for a few weeks.
That is not correct. The benefit of the "American" BB was that you could machine any bearing to fit that a crank manufacturer wanted. There is a standard, but I can't remember if it was the Profile bearing or the Redline flight bearings that would fit. Not all will, such as the Profile SS crank bearings. I believe it is a 1 5/8" OD. The difficulty is that the US is the biggest market and they refuse to use metric anything, while the rest of the world uses metric bearings.
